I applied to Illinois after they received their Sugar Bowl Berth at the end of the 2001-02 season. Six years later I have finally realized another Illinois winning season and bowl berth. While it is still undetermined where the Illini will play this winter, it will be at a warm site and a nice place for a vacation. I hoping that Mickey will welcome me with wide open arms to the Capital One Bowl or Champs Sports Bowl. But with powerhouse program Michigan and Ohio State ahead of Illinois I may be headed to Tampa and the Outback bowl. In a match up that fans would love to see, as well as network executives, Ron Zook may face his former Gator Team. The University of Florida drove Zook out of the sunshine state and Illinois welcomed him with open arms. If the two teams met it would make for some great headlines and an exciting game. The Illini have beaten expectations this season, and capped it off the other night with a 28-21 victory over the, then #1, Ohio State University. Northwestern heads to Champaign this week seeking a bowl berth and to dampen Illinois' parade. However, even though the basketball season has started (and the Illini won their first game against Northeastern), the football team is the talk of the town.
As many people know I am not a big fan of Michigan, and I enjoy watching them lose at any opportunity I have. I went to the Big House in 2005 when Michigan lost to Notre Dame. I felt the air was taken out of campus after the end of the game. The students were so depressed I had to get out of Dodge. I can't imagine what is what like after this weekends loss to Appalachian State. Immediately after the blocked kick this game was being talked about as the biggest upset in college football history; I would have had Division 1-A history, but Appalachian State is a Division 1-AA team. Michigan chances for a national title are over. They may drop from number 5 on the rankings to being unranked by the end of the day. Michigan can still hope to win the Big Ten but it will not be easy with teams like Wisconsin, Penn State, and Ohio State University. If the Wolverines don't kick it up a notch watch out for the Michigan faithful call for Lloyd Carr's head. Sorry to say, but RB Mike Hart and QB Chad Henne's Heisman Trophy hopes are gone as well. If any quarterback does win the Heisman I hope it is Colt Brennan of Hawaii. Colt threw for 6 TDs last week and only played in the first half.
